Research space planned will support focus on energy, environment, and materials research.  Functional spaces include wet and dry laboratories and related spaces including shared equipment rooms, offices/workplace, conference rooms, break rooms and storage.

Current Plan: Wet and dry research labs for up to 20 principle investigators.

Total Square Feet: 77,000 GSF

BUSINESS INCUBATOR

Satisfying needs for both research and business development requires a variety of spaces including both wet and dry laboratory spaces in modular configuration for maximum flexibility, as well as administrative office space.

Current Plan: Wet and dry research labs for up to 6 principle investigators, technology transfer office, information technology support, and innovation center (currently housed in the existing 4747 Troost building).

Total Square Feet: 53,000 GSF

EDUCATION

The education and job training curriculum will require highly flexible spaces such as classrooms and interactive training areas, plus public meeting spaces.

Current Plan: Four classrooms, one 400-seat forum space, technology training area, a “decision theater” and community kitchen.

Total Square Feet: 50,000 GSF

BOTANICAL GARDEN

Botanical garden will consist of both indoor conservatory and outdoor spaces.   The site will provide space for agricultural research, stormwater treatment, native landscaping demonstration, as well as community and urban agriculture and a food forest.

Current Plan: An indoor conservatory (10,000 square feet), interactive learning library, and back-of-house space.  Outdoor space includes botanical garden, kitchen plaza, shade and sun gardens, urban agriculture plots, water gardens, food forest and stormwater management

Total Square Feet: 22,000 GSF plus extensive site landscape

GOVERNANCE

Office space for the entity that will govern and operate the Climate Sustainability Center will be provided.  This includes private and open office space, conference rooms, and storage.

Current Plan: Private and open office space, meeting spaces and general building storage/support space.

Total Square Feet: 15,000 GSF

This “wordle” illustrates key words used in conversations during the Visioning Workshop and Open House Forums – the larger the word, the more often it was mentioned.

Community stakeholders and the general public were invited to attend one of two Open House Forums on March 25 + 27, 2010 at the project site (4747 Troost).  there is so much work currently in design or about to begin the construction phase, several projects in the immediate area were represented.  A copy of the slideshow displayed during the event is attached, including the four questions asked of the visitors.

On March 15, 2010, community leaders convened at the Kauffman Center on Rockhill Road in Kansas City to hear about the Climate Sustainability Center and share their ideas and vision for this facility.  The project’s Advisory Panel and Potential Partners were invited to attend the event.  A copy of the slideshow shared during the event is attached, including the questions that were asked of the eleven tables of participants.
